There are predefined methodologies easy to follow. Eg.: how to specify, how to develop? There are predefined schemes in connection with testing also but testing methodology does not stand alone, independently. It has to be adapted to something. It’s common that developers choose their development method in which they hand over the code. The execution of the chosen development method is shaped by the people, environment and the team. The tester cannot afford to work following a book of testing instructions pulled out of the drawer. The tester has to adapt himself to the developer’s working method in order to gain efficiency otherwise there will be gaps in the cooperation between developers and testers.
During one of our project work I was requested by the Client to compile the ideal Agile testing method. Agile has many interpretations in our home country therefore I started researching the team dynamics and the development process. Naturally the Client claimed to have the complete agile methodology covered, however I had to do my best based on real life as the whole process would fall apart if I only considered the method principles. Finally I ended up putting together a proposal which I believed to work under the given circumstances. The Client came back saying it’s pretty much a waterfall model. -and he was correct as my proposal has been adapted to the current working method.
